January 6th, 2017 – We meet in the fantastic city of San Miniato to start this little adventure that will last three days. Temperatures are not inviting, but the sun shining and the sky completely clear off the clouds invites us to start and warm up one step after an other. It will be for the atmosphere of this Way, or the sweet hilly landscapes but a magical understanding immediately shows up within the group. Among stories, laughters and a tea sip we follow the path leading us to the legendary Francigena’s Roverella (Oak) and his diary where pilgrims can leave a greeting and the beautiful Pieve of Coiano; the river Elsa near Castelfiorentino gives us the sight of two beautiful species of Herons, one white and one grey. On arrival, we rest with some hot drinks before we say goodbye with the setting of the sun. Total immersion in history, in nature, in the beauty of the landscape and of being together.
January 7th, 2017 – Meeting point: the beautiful hostel Sigerico in Gambassi Terme where the legendary manager, Franco (perhaps attracted by our enthusiastic voices!) peeps and greets us. We immediately warm up with a coffee; the temperatures are lower than the previous day but there is still a magnificent sun and the sky is completely clear, let’s start! Towards San Gimignano. New friends have joined the group, opportunity to share even more of our story and pass on the story of thisjourney. Our eyes are struck by
the magnificent views of the Valdelsa and the majestic Apuan Alps. We cross the peaceful sanctuary of Pancole, the little jewel of Collemucioli Tower and the mystique Pieve di Cellole. Now the towers of San Gimignano can be seen in all their grandeur and soon find ourselves walking through the alleys of the medieval village up to the Rock of Montestaffoli where we find ourselves spontaneously in silence admiring the stunning panorama. What better way to end the day ?!
January 8th, 2017 – Last day of walking! We start from Colle di Val d’Elsa to San Gimignano; we decide to turn around in order to visit the Elsa river’s Park in the morning without the risk of getting there at dusk. We were joined by new walkers, another great chance to make new friends even for the fearless who decided to accompany us all three days. After the incredible show given by the river Elsa with its colors and after passing its “veins”, we prepare to climb the trail to turn away from Colle Val d’Elsa and go through Fabbrica, and then cross the town of Molino d’Aiano and among ups and downs and some small ford begin to see the outskirts of San Gimignano, anticipated by the small hamlet of Montauto in the distance. We walk among vineyards on the gentle hills on sundown le
ad us to the village of Saint Lucia where we expect a little rest, a hot drink with Pandoro and our warmest greetings to our wonderful group without whom this experience would not have the same value. A huge thanks and see you next hike!
